The impact of Spanish Colonialism on El Salvador

Abstract

This study examines the Spanish colonial period in El Salvador since its discovery by Spanish explorers in 1524. During this time, El Salvador was subject to Spanish rule, becoming part of the Spanish Empire and governed by a Spanish viceroy. Due to its strategic location and natural resources, El Salvador became a target of colonial ambitions. As a result of these colonial ambitions, the country's indigenous peoples, especially the indigenous people of the Americas, were subjected to a variety of abuses, including violence, neglect, displacement, and murder by Spanish conquistadors. However, the Salvadoran people were able to achieve independence in 1821 after several revolutions and uprisings.
