Clara Dupont-Monod’s siblings in the novel of adaptation

Abstract

This research presents analysis of siblings in Clara Dupont Monod’s novel published in 2021. The novel received three prizes from the 2021 East high school competition, the Femina prize and the landreau Reader’s prize. The novelist discusses siblings and disabilities in French family uprooted by the birth of a child with disability .The events of the novel are much centered on the place of this child in his sibling composed of three children꞉ the eldest, the youngest girl and the last child.

        The novelist explores each brothers conflicting feelings about their sick little brother. The older brother takes a deep interest in his sick younger brother and fully accepts the mission of being his protector. The youngest girl loses the care of her older brother after the birth of this child and she only felt anger, jealousy and heated against him. The last child was born after the death of his disabled brother. He became a lasting shadow of his brother to his parents and two brothers.

The title of the novel is directly related the challenges in which the sibling have braved in life. Clara Dupont- Monod gives in her novel to the stones of the court of the house as narrator to tell the three stories of the siblings.
