The Iraqi press during the British Mandate: a historical descriptive study for the period from May 3, 1920 until October 3, 1932

Abstract

The study aims to identify the newspapers that were published during the British Mandate (1920-1932), especially since many of them were not addressed by researchers specializing in the field of journalism history. The historical descriptive approach was used in the study in order to identify the number of newspapers, their types, and their specialization.


The study included (229) newspapers and magazines. The number of newspapers during that stage reached (153) newspapers, while the number of magazines reached (76) magazines. The available intentional sample was adopted because these newspapers and magazines are available in many libraries, including the National Library and Archives. And the Central Library of the University of Baghdad, the Scientific Academy, and other available places in order to inventory their numbers. The study reached results, including that the percentage of newspapers published during that stage reached a percentage of (66,812%) of the total publications, while the percentage of magazines reached (33,188%) of the total publications.
