Abstract

This study explores the significance of numbers in prose poetry, highlighting the diverse meanings these numbers can convey, as they often carry numerous hidden layers within contemporary poetic texts. The meaning of a number can varies depending on its context—where the same number might hold a religious connotation in one poem and a philosophical or psychological one in another. The research reviews previous studies that have addressed the use of numbers in poetic texts dating back to the mid-20th century, noting the differences between those texts and contemporary ones in terms of the poets’ surrounding circumstances, cultural backgrounds, and their varying approaches to employing numbers in their poetry—factors which naturally influence the outcomes of such studies. This research adopts the semiotic method in analyzing the symbolism of numbers, as this approach is particularly effective in uncovering the relational connection between numbers and the text. Through their presence in the poem, numbers generate meanings and images that allow the poet to express thoughts and emotions indirectly, utilizing the symbolic richness of numbers in place of more explicit expressions
