Methods of Lexical Definition in the Dictionary of Reduplicated Triliteral Verbs By Dr. Elias Attallah

Abstract
This research paper adopts this valuable dictionary as a foundation for exploring its immense scientific value. Every dictionary that is compiled serves as a blessing for any nation, as it embodies the living tongue of its people. Thus, the scholar who enumerated and classified the reduplicated triliteral verbs in the Arabic language, and derived from this title another that reveals to the reader the essence and mysteries of the lexicographer’s craft, has rendered a significant contribution.
Lexical definition, in this sense, has come to be synonymous with several terms such as interpretation, explanation, and exegesis. The definition in the dictionary is therefore devoted to assigning each entry a specific meaning through one of the established methods of definition. This meaning is determined by the context in which it appears. The approach to definition varies according to the target audience, as it is neither rational nor appropriate for the lexicographer to employ the same type of definition for every category or group of users.
Despite the importance of this issue for lexicographers, it remains one of the most challenging aspects of their work. The study concludes that the dictionary under examination contains a variety of verb types; some are designated for sound names (onomatopoeic verbs) such as (faḥḥa), while others appear in the passive form, such as (massa).
